How Much Raw Food Should I Feed My Dog? (Feeding Chart)

"How much should I feed?" is the number one question we get from new raw feeders. The short answer: most adult dogs eat about 2–3% of their body weight per day. Here's how to find the right amount for your dog.

Start with 2.5%

For a typical adult dog that gets daily walks, start at 2.5% of body weight per day. Feed less (around 2%) for less active dogs and more (around 3%) for working or very active dogs.

Quick feeding chart

Dog weight Less active (2%) Daily walks (2.5%) Very active (3%)
10 lb 3.2 oz 4 oz 4.8 oz
20 lb 6.4 oz 8 oz 9.6 oz
30 lb 9.6 oz 12 oz 14.4 oz
40 lb 12.8 oz 1 lb 1.2 lb
50 lb 1 lb 1.25 lb 1.5 lb
70 lb 1.4 lb 1.75 lb 2.1 lb
90 lb 1.8 lb 2.25 lb 2.7 lb

Every Primitive Paws pack is 16 oz (1 lb), so a 40 lb dog on daily walks eats about one pack a day.

Adjust as you go

  • Weigh weekly for the first month. Gaining? Feed a little less. Looking lean? Feed a little more.
  • Split it up into one or two meals, whatever fits your routine.
  • Count treats. If your dog gets a lot of treats, trim the bowl to match.

These amounts are a starting point for healthy adult dogs. Puppies, seniors, and pregnant or nursing dogs have different needs, so check with your vet.
