How to Switch Your Dog from Kibble to Raw: A Simple 7-Day Plan
Share
Thinking about switching your dog from kibble to raw? The good news: it doesn't have to be complicated. Most dogs make the move in about a week with a simple, gradual plan. Here's exactly how we recommend doing it.
Why go slow?
Your dog's tummy is used to whatever they eat every day. A sudden change of any food, raw or not, can lead to an upset stomach. Mixing the new food into the old a little at a time gives their system a chance to adjust.
The 7-day switch plan
- Days 1–2: 25% Primitive Paws, 75% their old food
- Days 3–4: 50% Primitive Paws, 50% old food
- Days 5–6: 75% Primitive Paws, 25% old food
- Day 7: 100% Primitive Paws
Some dogs fly through it in a few days. Others need closer to two weeks. If your dog's stomach seems unsettled, just stay at the current step a little longer before moving on. Go at your dog's pace.
5 tips for a smooth switch
- Thaw ahead. The night before, place tomorrow's pack in a sealed zip-lock bag and set it in the fridge. The bag catches any drips.
- Keep everything else the same. Hold off on new treats or chews during the switch so you can tell how the food is going.
- Keep fresh water out. Raw food has more moisture than kibble, so don't be surprised if your dog drinks a little less.
- Feed the right amount. Most adult dogs eat about 2–3% of their body weight a day. Use our feeding calculator to find your dog's number.
- Check in with your vet if your dog is a puppy, a senior, pregnant or has a health condition.
The easiest way to start
Not sure raw is right for your pup? That's exactly why we made the 12 lb Trial Pack: twelve 16 oz packs of elk and venison, about two weeks of meals for a 30 lb dog. Enough to make the switch and see how your dog likes it. Let your dog decide.
